Carbon footprints, Water footprints and Recycle
Calculations/estimations for carbon footprints and water footprints (if possible, blue and/or grey) of Scala Resins are available for each product.
For a high awareness of Sustainability and “footprints”, Scala Kimya advises use of RECYCLED Scala Resins – especially the thermoplastic ones which are more easily recycled.
An example for Resin carbon footprint
Production of virgin PTFE resin compared to using “recycled” PTFE:
“Based on the PTFE polymerization model plant study, the carbon emission for PTFE polymer was estimated as at least 9.6 kg CO2eq /kg PTFE. This calculation does not include the energy consumption of mining calcium fluoride, producing sulfuric acid and chloroform which will all add further to the total energy consumption. In other words, using 1 kg of Recycled PTFE instead of virgin PTFE will eliminate at least 10 kg and probably more of equivalent CO2 emission.”***
An example for U.V. application carbon footprint
Although different calculations can be made, it is obvious that UV coating applications have less carbon footprints than fossil fuel applications. UV coating application is a “Scope 2” carbon footprint whereas classical thermal applications are “Scope 1” carbon footprints. UV emission is not a direct carbon consumer, it transfers electrical energy.
In both flash off/water based and in solvent-based UV coating applications, there will be zero waste of paint if the system is working “zero scrap”.
